#155: The Coats Edit

#155: The Coats Edit
4 minutes to read

Last week, I wore my dressing gown during the working day. It’s fine, I was wfh, I didn’t pitch up to a stakeholder meeting in my waffle robe. But, the dressing-gown-over-jumper event did herald the onslaught of winter. This called for a new set of coats.

I tend to switch up my coats on a twice-yearly basis. If I stray too far from this brief, I either go bankrupt or get very bored. I don’t need to preach to you about what you should look for in a good coat, I don’t make your rules. What I do know is that I need four, yes four. They can be summarised as thus:

Running in the pissing rain coat

We’re talking your North Face, Regatta jobber here. Maybe a fleece lining (newsflash guys: mesh or webbing is not waterproof), definitely some form of hood. Gold tier: zippable pockets. Tricky one on the colour palette, because I don’t mind a high-viz, reflective stripe fella, but this isn’t really the done thing for a quick dash to Sainsbury’s after the gym. But then, when I’m in Lycra and Asics, no-one tends to mess with me.

{Early} #100happydays Day 32 Every Sunday morning starts with a mammoth session at @puregymofficial and every Sunday afternoon tends to end with a trip to @costacoffee. Between these two points, I cook, do some housework, and fail to have a whole conversation with my husband due to my two miniature serial interrupters. But that’s kind of my jam, and there’s something knobbishly satisfying about lacing up and getting out at 7.30am. Smart yet low-functioning designer jacket

Yes, I got this Karen Millen purple jacket in a charity shop and I LOVE IT. Thanks Kaz. However, this is a remarkably poor choice for any outdoor climate that is below 18 degrees and possibly a bit precipitous. Makes mama look pretty though. Except my face which looked rough and therefore got a savage crop.

The school-run yummy mummy casual gilet

I will not call it a bodywarmer. Again, this is a second-hand procurement but I have no shame about this fact. I love being able to conceal half of my face under the enormous hood, and the posho Jack Wills padding makes me feel like I’m wrapped in a duvet. Yea, my arms might fall off with frostbite. But have you ever tried to wear a jumper AND a gilet? Major back sweat within an hour, take it from one who knows.

The business savvy accomplished working mum coat

Possibly the most exciting of all. While shivering during a trip to the park wearing a thin boyfriend cardigan and not paying due care and attention to my children, I scoured the asos sale (women’s) on my phone. I found this bee-YOO-tiful belted mac, in a gorgeous dusty pink, by PrettyLittleThing. It’s quite long-line, and it looks so smart over pencil skirts and tapered trousers. Despite being lightweight, it’s lovely and warm, and it makes me feel all the profesh.

Er, now. When I first wore the coat, I found myself in the unfortunate position of having no-one to take a photo of me in it, other than my four year old child. So, very many apologies for the slight jaunty angle and gritted teeth on my visage. “I took ten mummy just in case they’re not good.” No, darling, you took 164 and I’m not even lying. Delete, delete, delete.

Sigh. Don’t let these put you off, the coat is fabulous.

I need to get myself to some charity shops and see what goodies I can find! I love the ASOS coat though, such a gorgeous colour!

Oh I love it, the colour really suits you and makes you look very chic! I’m not sure a short-ass like me could pull that off…I did laugh out loud to your body warmer comment, it will always be a gilet hahaha. Xx

All you need is some sky high heels that you can’t walk in 😉
